Sabu Thomas is a distinguished Indian materials scientist and academic leader, born on March 14, 1960, specializing in polymer science, nanocomposites, and nanotechnology. He earned his BSc in Chemistry, BTech in Polymer Science and Rubber Technology from Kerala institutions and Cochin University, followed by a PhD in 1987 from IIT Kharagpur under Profs. S.K. De and B.R. Gupta. Joining Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) in Kottayam as a lecturer in 1987, he rose to full professor in 1997 and now serves as Vice-Chancellor, while directing the International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
Thomas has authored over 1,200 peer-reviewed papers, 150 co-edited books, and holds 15 patents, achieving an H-index of 115 and fellowships like FRSC from the Royal Society of Chemistry. His research focuses on polymer nanocomposites, green nanotechnology, and industrial applications in tires, biomedical devices, and space technology, including collaborations with Apollo Tyres on high-performance materials. A prolific mentor, he has supervised numerous PhDs and fostered international ties in sustainable materials research.
