Dr. Zhanar Naurosbayeva (Kazakhstan) is the head of the ‘Regional Climate Change’ laboratory at the Institute of Geography and Water Security JSC. She completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and her postgraduate studies at the Russian State Hydrometeorological University, where she defended her PhD thesis. The topic of her PhD thesis was ‘The Impact of Climate Change on the Ice Regime of the Caspian Sea’. As part of her thesis, she developed and implemented a methodology for short-term forecasting of ice thickness growth into the operational work of Kazhydromet, with an accuracy rate of 96–98%. The results of this work have been tested at the hydrometeorological centres in Hamburg and Moscow, as well as at Kazhydromet. She has over 15 years’ experience in research, studying climate change, modelling climate scenarios, investigating the ice regime of the Caspian Sea, and researching hazardous meteorological phenomena (fog, thunderstorms, sea ice). She has authored over 80 publications in the fields of meteorology, climatology and hydrology, including a monograph and articles in leading journals. She has participated in over 100 conferences and seminars. She has six medals, including two state medals, as well as over 70 certificates, diplomas and letters of appreciation. Zhanar is a founding member and leadership council of the Women in Water Diplomacy Network in Central Asia and Afghanistan.
